Talented and high. These names take "stoner flicks" to a new level.

Cannabis has been depicted in film for decades – and not always favorably. Now, in the surging tide of legalization in the U.S., marijuana is receiving credit from filmmakers for empowering their creative spirit. In a big-dollar business like Hollywood and the film industry, employees have plenty of reasons (e.g. needing to be insurable for big studios) for keeping their private affairs private. Plenty of filmmakers have been photographed and “spotted” smoking cannabis; here’s a list of big-screen names who aren’t afraid to talk about their marijuana use.

1. Frances McDormand

The Oscar-winning actress is an incredibly talented and versatile performer who’s been outspoken about her cannabis use for years. On a 2003 cover of High Times, she said, “I'm a recreational pot-smoker. There has never been enough of a distinction between marijuana and other drugs. It's a human rights issue, a censorship issue, and a choice issue.”

2. Danny Devito

The Always Sunny in Philadelphia star has said he is “very excited about the legalization” of cannabis, and he’s been on the bandwagon for quite some time. A smoker since the 60s, he tweeted in 2010, in support of California’s Prop. 19 vote, “Even if one doesn’t smoke pot one has to see the benefits decriminalizing (sic) it.”

3. Oliver Stone

The acclaimed, 3-time Oscar winning director has been an advocate for legalization for years, and sees the current climate as a social injustice. “It can be done,” he said of legalization in 2012, promoting his cartel film Savages. “It can be done legally, safely, healthy, and it can be taxed and the government can pay for education and stuff like that. Also, you can save a fortune by not putting kids in jail." Stone also has a preference. “There's good weed everywhere in the world, but my god, these Americans are brilliant.”

4. Morgan Freeman

Arguably the most recognizable voice in cinema, Morgan Freeman has been incredibly clear about his stance in the cannabis discussion. In reference to ingesting the flower, he told the Daily Beast “How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it.” And speaking about legalization: “This movement is really a long time coming, and it’s getting legs – longer legs.”

5. Kevin Smith

There’s a good reason he’s hailed as the king of stoner movies. "In the last … 7 years, I've been more productive than I was the first 15 years of my career. And that's because I love smoking so much,” he told Vulture in 2014. “So every time I was smoking I was like, 'I better do something creative,' so it makes more output.”
