2016 has already been one of the strangest years in known memory that includes increased police shootings, rampant negativity on social media, and a presidential election nightmare that seems like it won’t ever end. Given all this, the bizarre increase number of “killer clown” sightings across somehow isn't much of a surprise.
One of the most notorious clowns in America has penned an op-ed about the increased number of creepy clown sightings that has swept America through social media. Violent J of Insane Clown Posse gives his take on the increased number of sightings, Juggalos being targeted in anti-clown backlash, and the fact that many clowns we should be scared of don’t wear any make-up.
"From keystone-cop clowns shooting unarmed citizens, to racist clowns burning down Islamic centers or clowns in the NSA spying on us through our cell phones and laptops, America has turned into something far more terrifying than Insane Clown Posse’s Dark Carnival," Violent J wrote in his Time editorial.
He goes on to explain how ICP’s fan base, the Juggalos, have long been the target of law enforcement, including being placed on the FBI’s list of organized crime organizations for years. However, the recent reports of clowns luring kids into the woods and terrorizing the streets at night have yielded to zero arrests and the massive public outcry is still continuing.
"As ICP has discovered over the last decade, there's a whole army of scary, terrifying and dangerous clowns out there in this country trying to suppress the rights of thousands of people to exercise the most basic part of the Declaration of Independence, which evokes the freedom to 'Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,' Violent J says. "The only difference is these clowns don't wear greasepaint."
As America continues to share posts about creepy clowns with nothing better to do than scare the living daylight out of us, the frenzy has caused a 300 percent spike in clown costume sales, according to USA Today.
Regardless of our current obsession with clowns, there is no real threat founded on facts, only fear. Attacking people for their dedication to a band by awkwardly wearing makeup to belong to a subculture we may not understand is the real threat.
