Physical transformation has often led to acclaimed performances in films, especially when the person in question is attractive and tones down their natural features in order to properly incarnate a particular character.  Actors and actresses such as Charlize Theron (Monster) and Christian Bale (The Machinist, American Hustle) have proved this, but they also have the acting chops to pull it off. It isn’t all about cosmetics.

If you’ve followed Matthew McConaughey’s evolution from a heartthrob actor (despite his cult classic performance in Dazed and Confused) in throwaway films such as Failure To Launch and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,  to an acting powerhouse thanks to his performances in Mud, HBO’s True Detective, The Wolf of Wall Street and Interstellar then you’ve likely noticed that his talent is very real.

In his new film Gold, McConaughey packs on the pounds and sheds his good looks (and hair) to play Kenny Wells, a woeful investor who improbably finds enough gold to become a billionaire. It is directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) and co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramirez.

The trailer gives one the gist of the film without giving too much away, and it even shows McConaughey living dangerously and petting a tiger. Watch it here , you have 4 months to dream about striking it rich before Gold open on Christmas Day.
