Since being knighted as the president of Kanye West’s label G.O.O.D. Music, Terrence Thornton, a.k.a Pusha T has made a subtle transformation from one of the grittiest rappers in the game to a politically minded advocate for prison reform. The West Virginia-based rapper, once one-half of the legendary hip hop duo Clipse, recently sat down to talk about voting rights for felons on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and also discussed his support and ongoing collaboration with Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Now, King Push is coming out to support California’s Proposition 64, which would legalize recreational cannabis across the most populated state in the country. The well-respected rapper recently starred in a new PSA calling for voters to support the initiative, which would legalize cannabis use for adults aged 21 and over. Though he’s not a voter in the state of California, Pusha T is looking at this legislation as a potential solution to reduce the country’s outrageous mass incarceration rates.

“I’m not a California voter, but I know when good legislation passes in the biggest state, other states follow. And that's an important step in ending mass incarceration across the country. If ending prohibition on marijuana reduces recidivism, then let’s do it,” Pusha T says in the video.

According to Pusha T, strict marijuana criminalization has resulted in our overpopulated prison population, and Prop 64 is the first step to alleviating this problem. Though the initiative would likely push the entire country in the right direction, a number of cannabis advocates and growers in the state have come out against Prop 64 due to strict regulations and potentially troublesome oversight that would hinder the success of smaller grows and businesses.

The PSA is yet another political move made by the popular rapper. He recently teamed up with the Clinton campaign to get people registered to vote by offering participants an opportunity to meet the rapper in person. All the while, King Push has still been dropping fire tracks throughout the year, including the single “H.G.T.V.” and the Jay Z collab “Drug Dealers Anonymous”

As someone who didn’t fly his political flag much in the past, the work that Pusha T has done this election cycle is quite remarkable. With a primary focus on ending mass incarceration and getting felons more rights, Push is providing these disenfranchised citizens with a much needed voice.
