Retro Games Making a Comeback: The Mini Console Wars Have Begun

From Pokemon Go to the Nintendo Mini-NES, it’s clear retro games are back like they never left.

Pokemon Go-Mania continues to take over the globe, and as we mentioned a few weeks back, the new Nintendo Mini-NES is going to be released in March 2017. Nintendo's retro console will feature 30 classic games with an HDMI output and one controller with the option to buy a second controller for an additional $9.99.

Now it appears Nintendo’s 90s-era competitor Sega is upping the ante and licensing its own mini gaming system called the mini-Mega Drive featuring 40 classic Sega Genesis games in addition to 40 bonus arcade games. The console will also include 2 controllers ready for your 2-player duels in Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3.

There is a catch when it comes to the new Sega console. First of all, the licensed company AtGames has been known to produce less than optimal quality gaming systems in the past from the Atari Flashback to the Classic Game Console.

Second, the mini-Mega Drive will not support an HDMI output and will rely on the classic composite outputs. The classic games on the Sega were made for the old school CRT monitors and there is a strong chance the games may not look quite right when hooked up to a modern day screen.

The good news is the console will initially be released in Europe for approximately the same price as the Nintendo Mini-NES, around $50.

That leaves enough time for AtGames to either work out any bugs or give enough time for European players to review the product so you can determine if it is the right purchase for you.
