Actor, singer, and model Olurotimi Akinosho, better known to fans as Rotimi, understands the value of discipline and hard work. The 27-year-old’s parents, Nigerian immigrants who were homeless in their early 20s and worked diligently to build successful careers in investment banking and government and provide for their only son, were shining examples of drive, determination, and the importance of security.

Rotimi, who grew up in New Jersey, went a less traditional route but clearly kept their principles in mind. At 15, the budding singer won “Amateur Night” at the Apollo Theater twice, but he put off a risky pursuit of an entertainment career to attend Northwestern University. It was only after graduating in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a minor in Business that he went full force after his dreams.

In 2011, Rotimi released two mixtapes, The Resume and While You Wait, and also made his television debut as drug dealer Darius Morrison on the Starz show Boss. The critically acclaimed series only lasted two seasons, but Rotimi soon broke into movies, appearing in Black Nativity (2013) and the young-adult dystopian blockbuster Divergent (2014). In 2015, he joined the cast of the Starz smash Power, playing the protégé of co-creator and producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s drug lord character, Kanan. That same year, 50 signed Rotimi to G-Unit Records. This past summer, he appeared in the third season of Power and released Summer Bangerz, a five-track project of contemporary R&B takes on classic songs like LL Cool J’s “Doin It.”

As busy as he is, Rotimi had to make time for a GGN interview with Power super fan Snoop. On the latest episode, they talk about tons of behind-the-scenes info about Power, how Rotimi balances music and acting, and the Nigerian work ethic.
