Best known for his critically acclaimed debut album, Endtroducing….., which came out in 1996, American producer DJ Shadow instantly became one of the most recognizable musicians to use vinyl sampling and record scratching, producing a wide-range of instrumental hip-hop and breakbeats. The producer has an unbelievable personal stash of over 60,000 records, and blends samples from an eclectic range of genres, including funk, rock, hip-hop, ambient, jazz, and soul within his beats.

After experimenting with a wide range of sounds over the last decade, and putting out a discography comprised of five full length albums, DJ Shadow is back on the turntables with his upcoming album in queue.

In preparation for his new album, The Mountain Will Fall, which will be released on June 24, DJ Shadow visited Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show to premiere his latest track, entitled “The Sideshow”.

The track takes a unique approach to the classic form of battle break vinyl, digging deep into his record crates to find rhythms and sounds that have never been sampled or scratched before. The track is driven by the newfound record scratches and vintage hip-hop breakbeat, and it’s clear that DJ Shadow is focused on reinventing his classic style with fresh sounds and never-before-heard scratches.

“For me, one of the things that’s really annoyed me through the last ten years is that whenever I hear a scratch track, it’s like ‘oh that’s cool to hear scratching on a record’, but it’s always the same sounds that have been on all the battle break records for the last 25 years, which are great,” DJ Shadow told Zane Lowe. “But I thought it’d be ill if I made a scratch track where none of the breaks or scratches that I’m using are recognizable by 99% of DJs.”

Thus far, DJ Shadow has released a handful of other tracks and bonus tracks from the upcoming album, including the title track, as well as bonus tracks “Swerve,” “Nobody Speak” (feat. Run the Jewels), and “Bergschrund” (feat. Nils Frahm). The producer is currently playing a string of shows out in Europe, and will return to tour various cities in North America, starting in late September. Until then, break out the old boombox and get set for DJ Shadow’s “The Sideshow”.
