When it comes creating deep electro-driven music that is fit for both the club and your bedroom, no one cultivates this wide-reaching sound quite like Jamie xx. Aside from his work as a member of the established indie outfit, The xx, the producer has become widely recognized on the electronic circuit for his hypnotizing and minimalistic beats. His last album, In Colour, was a wondrous journey through the vast sounds of Jamie xx, featuring unique collaborations with Young Thug, Popcaan, and others.
Released in 2015, Jamie xx has just released a music video for the opening track on the album, which is called “Gosh”. The song is a five minute journey through a pleasantly clattering soundscape, bringing the listener into a submissive and repetitive head nod throughout. The sublime music video was directed by Romain Gavras, known for his work with Kanye West, Jay Z, M.I.A, and others, and stars Hassan Kone. Taking place in the Chinese town of Tianducheng, which consists of a ghost town replica of the city of Paris (even with a faux-Eiffel Tower), the music video is one that is truly worthy of the big screen.
As Jamie xx’s vibrant and alarming sounds whiz in and out, the viewer is taken into this strangely realistic dystopia featuring a synchronized army of blonde teenagers marching and chanting, while Kone and his blonde cronies in all-white lifelessly watch on. Utilizing the replica set, the last shot is certainly the capstone to this true visual masterpiece, zooming out and away from the replica Eiffel Tower as the army marches in patterns around the video’s protagonist. The song itself acts as a vehicle for the mind to wander, but the visually compelling music video just adds that much more depth to the track.
