“Santa Claus” from North Pole, Alaska, Speaks Out About Medical Marijuana

Santa says marijuana users are going to make the “nice” list.

He's making a list and checking it twice, and Santa Claus says marijuana users will be making the nice list. Many of Alaska's towns have chosen not to participate in the state's recreational marijuana program, just as the residents of the tiny town of North Pole, Alaska recently voted to ban legalized marijuana. One man who legally changed his name to Santa Claus is speaking out about patients that rely on medical marijuana.

Santa Claus has served as an elected city council member in North Pole for nearly a year. "Cannabis users will not be getting coal in their stocking unless they've done some other thing that might be considered egregious," Santa told KTUU. Santa is deeply religious, politically involved and has a popular following on social media.

Claus is speaking out about North Pole's Proposition 7. Residents recently passed Proposition 7, banning the sale of marijuana within city limits. Like many other patients in Alaska, Santa suffers from cancer and relies on medical marijuana for relief. Now that North Pole has banned the sale of marijuana, Santa will have to drive to Fairbanks in order to have access to it. "I think they are not in this particular instance are not embracing the spirit of love," he said. "I think what they're doing is engendering hate, which comes from fear."

Before serving on the city council, Santa has held many seats, including Director of the Terrorism Research Communication Center, Chief of Safety and Security for the US Virgin Islands Port Authority, and was a member of FEMA's National Defense Executive Reserve. Santa Claus ran for president in 2008 and 2012 as well.

“I'm sad to report that a majority of North Pole voters voted to ban dispensaries in North Pole. Personally, I think that outcome calls into question North Pole's slogan: "Where the Spirit of Christmas Lives Year 'Round," Santa recently posted on his Facebook. Santa worries that the residents of North Pole are not embracing the embodiment of the Christmas spirit, by rushing to ban marijuana sales in his hometown.
