Trump Trolls Target Clinton's Questionable Cannabis Stance in Satirical #StopThePot Campaign

Internet-savvy pro-Trump trolls have created a satirical ad campaign to call out Hillary Clinton for her questionable cannabis stance.

In what is shaping up to be a historically unpopular presidential election in the United States, internet trolls in support for Trump have had a great time spreading anti-Hillary Clinton memes and vitriol remarks towards the Democratic nominee and her followers. At a critical time, the election being just days away, the media is focused in on Clinton’s rebirthed email scandal as we’ve all become too numb to Trump’s ignorant statements, accusations of sexual assault, rigged election remarks, and so on and so forth.

All the while, internet-savvy Trump trolls have been creating satirical campaign adverts framed as if they were created by Hillary Clinton’s team. Their recent movement took off with the #DraftOurDaughters campaign, which aimed to link Clinton’s recent aggressions towards Russia to falsified proof that she was pushing to draft young women into the military for war. Now, the pro-Trump internet brigade from Reddit’s r/the_donald group is going after Clinton for her unclear stance on medical cannabis, creating a similarly styled #StopThePot campaign.

A number of memes have been posted with the familiar Clinton campaign branding, stating falsified statements like “Marijuana is not medicine. Vote Hillary and #StopThePot” or “Donald Trump wants to decriminalize Marijuana. We know better. It's time America has tougher Marijuana laws, Enforced on a federal level.”

Unfortunately, the claim that Clinton has an anti-cannabis stance isn’t completely unfounded, as it was recently unearthed by WikiLeaks that she is against (though this has been pitted against a more recent leak that shows her in favor some form of decriminalization). In addition her daughter Chelsea Clinton has made some questionable remarks disparaging the medicinal value of cannabis, which has likely left a bad taste in the mouths of advocates. According to a Reddit user named Avatarius87, the pro-Trump group started misinformation-fueled #StopThePot campaign to raise “awareness” for Clinton’s anti-cannabis stance.

“This realization hit me, that she could very well be threatening to actually regress on cannabis policy,” Avatarius87 said to The Washington Post, “and as someone who is avidly for the decriminalization of cannabis for health and criminal reasons, I had a chance to make it a part of the conversation.”

But like most attacks during this election cycle, one side seems to go on the attack while conveniently ignoring their own similar flaws. Though Trump has claimed at times to be supportive of medical cannabis, his running mate Mike Pence is one of the strongest anti-cannabis politicians in the country, leaving many to doubt that either candidate will do right by marijuana users.
